Isis Amelie Hjorth
My work explores themes relating to artificial intelligence and the human experience, informed by contemporary scholarly debates. Examining tensions arising from AI's embedding across society, I manipulate a diverse array of materials and techniques to produce physical and digital objects. At times, these objects are subsequently modified or expanded upon by AI, before being reintegrated into my workflows. The resulting visuals and discourses constitute my dataset, which is as absurd and biased as any training set underpinning AI paradigms expanding at speed. At present, absurdity manifests through Mr Owl and other shapeshifting characters seamlessly permeating my data.
For the MFA exhibition, I’ve digitally printed key data points onto large swatches of fabric, only for them to be cut up and physically reassembled and marked by dexterous human hands in a partial ode to Dadaism and the domestic appliqué quilts of the 1850s. Installed as a structure, they now form “The (Not) Black Box”, inviting audiences to step inside to engage with the video work “The Becomings of Being, FFS”.
